The Shift From SEO To AEO: What Business Owners Must Know
The Shift from SEO to AEO: Understanding the Basics
Here’s a number that should make you sit up. In the first four months of 2026, 68.01% of U.S. Google searches ended without a click, according to SparkToro research. Not a click to your site. A click to anything.
Picture a shop on a busy street. Foot traffic is up, but fewer people walk in. They read the sign in the window and leave satisfied. That sign is now Google’s AI-generated answer.
This matters because the way customers find you is changing faster than most marketing budgets. SEO is about getting your page to rank. Answer engine optimization (AEO) is about getting your answer chosen. HubSpot defines AEO as “a content strategy that structures information so AI engines can extract, cite, and surface it directly.” That covers AI Overviews, voice search, and tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini.
The catch? A page can rank beautifully and still never get quoted by an AI. HubSpot warns that content that performs well in one won’t automatically perform well in the other.
Takeaway: SEO earns you the listing. AEO earns you the mention.
Why Businesses Can’t Ignore AEO Anymore
When Google shows an AI summary, people click a traditional result on just 8% of visits. Without one, it’s 15%. Pew Research Center’s analysis of real browsing data also found that only 1% of visits involved a click on a link inside the summary itself.
A separate randomized experiment with 1,065 Chrome users found that AI Overviews cut outbound organic clicks by 39.8%. Your customer still asks the question. They just never visit your site to get the answer.
Now the upside. Semrush found, as reported by Coursera, that the average AI search visitor in 2025 was 4.4 times more valuable than the average organic visitor. Someone who arrives after an AI recommended you is further along in their decision. You get fewer tire-kickers and more buyers.
Here’s the tricky part. Salesforce notes that a person who sees your brand in an AI answer, doesn’t click, and searches your name later is an “invisible” conversion. Your dashboard won’t show it. Judge AEO only on clicks and you’ll undervalue it.
Takeaway: Your customers are asking the concierge at the door. Make sure it knows your name.
AEO vs. SEO: Are They Competing or Complementary?
A year ago, 76% of pages cited in Google’s AI Overviews also ranked in the top 10 for the same query. Ahrefs’ updated study of 863,000 keywords found that figure had fallen to 38%. Page one still matters. It just no longer guarantees you’re the answer.
So is this a budget fight? No. Semrush calls the relationship symbiotic: “strong SEO fuels AEO success since AI systems favor content from trusted domains with strong organic rankings and authority.”
The data backs that up. BrightEdge tracked 16 months of citations and saw overlap with organic rankings grow from about 32% to 54%. Studies disagree on exact numbers because they measure different things. The pattern holds: ranking and being cited are related, but no longer identical.
Takeaway: SEO builds the trust. AEO packages that trust so a machine can quote it. Fund them as one system.
Building a Strategy for AEO: What You Need to Know
You don’t need a second playbook. You need to extend the first one. Four moves cover most of it.
Answer first. Siteimprove says answer engines reward “extractability, authority signals, and semantic clarity over keyword density and backlink volume.” Put a short, direct answer under each question, then add depth. Write your pricing and “how does this work?” pages as if an AI will lift one paragraph. It probably will.
Be readable to machines. Schema markup labels who you are and what each page covers. But Search Atlas says schema helps with eligibility and doesn’t guarantee citations. So put clear Q&As on the page and add schema behind them.
Build your reputation off your site. AI tools don’t only read your website. HubSpot advises “driving consensus about your brand across channels,” such as LinkedIn, Reddit, YouTube, and review sites. Fix your outdated listings first.
Measure the right things. Conductor found AI referrals made up only about 1.08% of website traffic on average, and 87.4% of that came from ChatGPT. The volume is small today. Track brand mentions and assisted conversions, not just visits.
Your Next Move
Here’s the short version. Clicks are shrinking, but the businesses named in the answer still win the customer. SEO gets you found. AEO gets you quoted.
This week, pick your ten most valuable customer questions. Ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google each one. Note who gets credited and whether what they say about you is accurate. Then rewrite your pages so you give the clearest answer to every one.
